Mia’s life today reflects determination, creativity and a commitment to helping others. At just 24, she serves as a Creative Lead for the Asian Pacific Children’s Fund (APCF), using her talents to advocate for vulnerable children across Asia. But her story didn’t start with opportunity or success—it began with hardship and uncertainty. Through the support of APCF, Mia’s life was transformed, proving that stability, education and love can pave the way to a brighter future. Mia was born into a world where survival took precedence over everything else. In her earliest years, she faced the harsh realities of poverty, with her family struggling to make ends meet. Regular meals were a luxury and access to education was a distant dream. “Growing up, every day felt like a challenge,” Mia recalls. “It wasn’t just about lacking material things. There was an overwhelming sense of instability—like nothing in life was certain or secure.” Her environment was one of brokenness. It wasn’t just financial hardship that held her back; it was the emotional toll of feeling trapped in a cycle she couldn’t escape. Opportunities seemed non-existent and hope was hard to come by. Without a stable foundation, Mia’s potential was stifled. Her days were consumed by worry and her nights were spent wondering if life would ever get better. Like so many children in similar situations, she was at risk of being forgotten.
Everything changed when Mia was brought to an APCF-supported orphanage. What began as a search for stability turned into a life-changing journey. “Walking into that home for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect,” she shares. “But almost immediately, I felt a sense of safety and belonging that I had never experienced before.” The orphanage wasn’t just a shelter—it was a place where Mia could begin to heal and rebuild her life. For the first time, she didn’t have to worry about where her next meal would come from or whether she would be safe at night. “The staff treated us like family,” she says. “They didn’t just care for us physically—they cared for our hearts and our futures.” This stability gave Mia the foundation she needed to thrive. With consistent care, encouragement and resources, she was finally able to focus on building a life she could be proud of.
One of the most transformative aspects of Mia’s time at the orphanage was the opportunity to pursue her education. These experiences helped shape her confidence and gave her the tools to navigate life with purpose. “Education wasn’t just about learning facts and figures,” Mia explains. “It was about discovering who I was and what I could contribute to the world.”
After high school, Mia continued her journey by enrolling in a four-year communications program. This field allowed her to harness her natural creativity and develop skills that would serve her professionally and personally. “College was a dream I never thought I’d achieve,” Mia shares. “But with the foundation APCF gave me, I was ready to take on the challenge.” During her studies, Mia grew not only academically but also as a person. She learned how to express herself, refine her ideas and connect with others through storytelling—a skill that would become central to her future work. Her time at college was also a period of personal discovery. With the values instilled in her at the orphanage, Mia continued to grow spiritually and emotionally, deepening her sense of purpose.
Upon graduating, Mia’s journey came full circle when she joined the team at APCF. As a Creative Lead, she now uses her education and talents to advocate for children who face challenges similar to those she overcame. “I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to give back to the organization that gave me so much,” Mia says. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of a mission that changes lives.” Mia’s role involves crafting campaigns, creating content and sharing stories that highlight the importance of APCF’s work. Her personal experience gives her a unique perspective, allowing her to connect deeply with the children and families APCF serves. “I know what it’s like to feel hopeless,” she shares. “And I know how transformative it can be when someone steps in to help.” Through her work, Mia is helping to create opportunities for more children to thrive—children who, like her, deserve a chance to rewrite their stories.
